Free wireless internet installed The hotel has installed a dedicated broadband router, and set up four wireless repeaters. This affords very good wireless connectivity in the public areas, and coverage to most bedrooms. Ask at reception for the encryption keys so you can configure your laptop to connect for internet use. It's free for guests to use.

Guest Internet Computer in Lounge We have bought and professionally configured a high spec. computer and located it in the public lounge. This is connected to the internet and you are free to use it while the lounge is open - you can check your email and Facebook accounts, use internet banking securely and search for bath tourist information using the home page - all for free!

Family suite upgraded (Rooms
49 & 50) We have made a big change to our popular family suite (double room with adjoining twin room). The floor has been lowered in room 49's bathroom and a proper bath & shower installed - the redesign yielded more space. This suite of rooms offers great value to families or to 3-4 adults.

Third Floor Corridor & new Carpet The third (top floor) has been revamped; with the original dado rail recited and painted white, a strong mustard colour wall paper applied, and brightening energy-saving light fittings installed. The red hotel carpet has also been replaced in most corridors and stair cases - keeping the place fresh looking and warm.

Staff Training - Fire Wardens To keep abreast of current legislation and to train our more senior staff, our Duty Managers have completed the Fire Warden certificate. All relevant staff refreshed their Basic Food Hygiene certificates and Manual Handling certificates as well. One our happy number even completed the gruelling 4 day First Aid at Work course - we hope you feel safer!

Room 42 Single upgraded This third floor single has been redesigned to extend into the corridor, permitting the installation of a bath & shower en suite. The extra room has also allowed a larger single bed and a smart writing desk. We have also started to put flat-screen TVs on wall brackets in these compact rooms, making the room comfortable and cosy.

Upgraded to 5 Star Guest Accommodation following
inspection The hotel inspector has made his surprise call, and by all accounts enjoyed himself! Carfax has been upgraded under the new grading criteria to 5 star Guest Accommodation (not to be confused with 5 star Hotel accommodation).

Remodelling of Room 20 - Plus double In line with the annual redecoration program, this double room has been upgraded from standard to plus. It has had it's Georgian ceiling and cornice returned, it's ceiling rose reset, and a bath/shower installed. A beautiful great value double!

Staff Training Successes Continuing with the hotel's policy of staff training and development, all of the staff have now updated their 'Basic Food Hygiene' certificates. Lena, our cook, has completed the higher ' intermediate' level, and completed the ‘Safer Food, Better Hygiene’ course.

Wheelchair Public Toilet
revamp The ground floor toilet, which is equipped for wheelchair users, has had a complete make over, and now sports attractive wall and floor tiles.

Room 14 Double redecorated This lovely 'standard' grade double at the rear of the hotel, on the ground floor, has been decorated to a high standard. The bathroom has been redesigned to include a half-bath with the shower, and a central ceiling rose has been fitted to elegant effect.

Front Entrance revamped The hotel front entrance has been carefully redecorated, with the replacement of the elaborate ceiling rose and restoration of the window shutters. The new carpet throughout finishes the 'first impression, good impression' effect, as does the welcoming receptionist smile!

New Dining Room Table Fabrics We have stopped washing our own table clothes and napkins, and changed to freshly laundered and pressed linen hire. The tables have never looked so sharp!

Carfax Awarded FIVE Diamonds Following a surprise hotel inspection by the VisitBritain (old English Tourist Board) representative, the hotel facilities and staff have been awarded an additional diamond rating to bring us up to 5 diamonds. This is the highest rating in our category and we are very proud!

AquAid Chilled Water
Dispensers Responding to guests and staff requests for a chilled water dispenser, we have installed a unit in the lobby and at the back entrance. What's more, Carfax is happy to use Christian Aid's water bottles, which send a donation per bottle to the AquAid project. Every water-cooler sited raises enough money to provide two children water for the rest of their lives.

Conference Room & Business
Centre We have redecorated and upgraded our Conference room with a small Business Centre. The facilities now include; Four Speaker audio system, DVD/Video/CD, Loop Amplifier for hearing aids, Digital Projector and large screen, air conditioning, and a dedicated business room with broadband internet connectivity, fax, and copier/printer.

Offices & New Print Room This year has seen one of the most ambitious redecoration/re-arranging in the last 10 years for staff. We have redecorated and reorganised every staff working space and store, and rewired the entire hotel computer network and re-sited the server in the process. Phew!

Superior Triple Room I did say the new Room 35 was my favourite - I lied, room 24 on the first floor steals the title by a whisker. Individually designed, this Superior Double & Single has 3 fabulous Georgian sash windows, a separate dressing room, and a marvellous bathroom/toilet.

Fireplace In line with the extensive program of redecoration this year, rooms 37 & 35 (formally a single and a double), have been merged in to one beautiful Superior Double room. Original features like the fire place and sash window shutters have been restored, and our designer has chosen a terrific colour scheme. This room is now my favourite!

Vanity Fair filming starts
outside Carfax Great Pulteney Street has been taken over by Hollywood for a week's filming of Thackeray's Vanity Fair. It's being directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding), and stars huge names like Reese Witherspoon (American Psycho), Gabriel Burne (The Usual Suspects), Bob Hoskins (Who Killed Roger Rabbit), and Jim Broadbent (Bridget Jones' Diary). Staff and guests are out in force with cameras as the actors and crew go about the making of a big budget feature film. I just hope they tidy up after themselves!

Carfax Voucher Scheme Launched A limited number of special vouchers have been printed, and are being distributed to guests who stay at the hotel over the next few months. These vouchers maybe redeemed on stays later in the year and are worth £10 or £20 off the subsequent bill, making it even more attractive to return for another visit to Bath.

Redesign of Two Doubles (26 & 27) These two second floor rooms have been given the architect treatment and have subsumed one of the smaller singles in order to create two much bigger doubles. The revamp affords better facilities and is another step in the on going program of restoring original features and providing the best possible accommodation.

New TVs with Sky Channels We signed a contract with Philips to replace our old TVs with brand new ones which has now been completed. These are remote controlled colour models, which have been tuned-in to receive radio, traditional broadcasts and Sky channels.

New Family Room with sofa bed & Double Restored with period features Above and beyond the annual program of redecoration, two rooms have been singled out this winter for special attention. Room 43 has been converted into a large double room with an additional good quality folder bed for children or a third adult. While Room 32 has been lovingly returned back to its spacious Georgian proportions and had it's huge window shutters restored back to working order.

Redecoration of the Dining Room The Pine Dining Room has had a colourful make over with new furnishings, crockery, and lighting. The buffet bar has also been re-sited and enlarged to allow for more choice at breakfast time. Carfax's breakfasts now rival the best!

New Dumb Waiter No...Manuel has not joined the staff! We have replaced the old food lift with a shining stainless steel hoist lift. You may not see it, but it adds to the overall smooth service that the dining staff provide to all departments and guests . |

New Main Lift At last. The main shaft which dates back to before 1936 and services the lower ground up to the third floor, has long been over due for a replacement cage. The difficulty has been to find a company who could supply a cage which fitted the existing shaft, as Bath's strict planning people quite rightly would not let us increase its size. So after much research an Italian company was found who could supply, and the lift is scheduled for replacement in December 2000. No more heavy gates to open and close manually, as the new lift is fully automatic - hooray!
